Dry and Dark

Water.  Agua.  The source of Life.  Water makes up over 70% of the Earth's surface.  If you poured all the world’s water on the United States and could contain it, you’d create a lake 90 miles deep.  Yet we were without running water for 26 hours!  You never realize how much you use water until you don't have it.  Simple things like washing your hands, flushing the toilet, cleaning dishes.  And bigger things like SHOWERING.  Let's just say we were all feeling less than fresh at school on Friday.

Just when it seemed like things couldn't get any worse, we lost power.  This isn't rare.  The power frequently goes out at night and comes back within the hour.  Wrong!  This one lasted 20 hours!!!  In my attempt to find out what on Earth was going on, I learned that Honduras is having an energy crisis.  Simply put, there just isn't enough to go around.  The government is trying to supply energy to more rural areas, but it is putting a strain on the supply.  So, basically some must go without in order to provide energy to others.  Same goes with the water.

I was reassured that the electricity would return in time for the big Honduras soccer game tonight.  In a soccer-loving country like this, I'm sure there would be an outright riot if the game was interrupted.  Sure enough, I'm happy to report we have both electricity AND water.

While it certainly isn't fun to have a turn to live without, it sure puts things into perspective.  I lived 20 hours without power to share with communities that have lived a LIFETIME without electricity or running water.  Sometimes we need to be reminded of that basic kindergarten rule:  Share everything.  What things could you do without?
